Dr. Emily Seelbinder will discuss the Dickinson song cycle “Emily—No Prisoner Be” by Pulitzer-Prize and Grammy®-winning composer Kevin Puts. The preview provides context for the upcoming performance by ensemble Time for Three and opera singer Joyce DiDonato at the Sarah Belk Gambrell Center for the Arts and Civic Engagement on October 16th. Today, she remains popular, enigmatic, and vital. Her work has inspired upwards of 3,500 song settings by composers from all over the world. Dr. Seelbinder is a Professor of English, Emerita, at Queens, where she developed interdisciplinary courses across the arts, among them “Dickinson and Her Descendants.” For over three decades, she has written and lectured about Dickinson’s use—and abuse—of scripture and how contemporary composers “read” Dickinson through music. She was honored with the Hunter-Hamilton Love of Teaching Award in 2007 and retired in 2019.
